TIMELINE                      The History of Green’s Point Light

  • Unknown                      -Original Land Grant to Green.
  • 1867               -“Saxby Gale” removes the natural causeway making Green’s Point an island.
  • 1879               -The Old House and the steam powered fog horn are constructed.
  • 1880               -Captain (George?) Helms become the first lighthouse keeper at Green’s Point.
  • 1882               -Captain Helms makes the young Sydney Dines the first assistant light keeper.
  • 1897               -Sidney Dines takes over as the second keeper of the lighthouse
  • 1898               -Sidney Dines’ son Prescott is born at the lighthouse.
  • 1903               -The lighthouse is constructed by the contractor C.L. McKeen of St. Andrews.
  • 1906               -The LMB sinks off of Dry Ledge.
  • 1907               -The wooden causeway is constructed.
  • 1918-1919    -The kerosene and diesel powered compressed air fog horn and second fog alarm building are constructed.
  • 1919               -Sidney and Mary Dines adopt Lloyd Leavitt.

                                -Roaring Bull buoy is moved by a whale.

  • 1920               -Wallace Nicholas and his brother Horace of the Passamaquoddy  Indian tribe at Pleasant Point begin                                                 their  yearly trips to Green’s Point to hunt porpoise.
  • 1935               -Russell Matthews and assistant Ray Hoyt take over the lighthouse for one year.
  • 1936               -Prescott Dines becomes the third light keeper of Green’s Point.

                                -Lloyd Leavitt becomes the assistant keeper.

  • 1940-1945    -Lloyd Leavitt and Prescott’s son Merril join the air force.

                                 Filling in as assistant keepers at this time were Joey Lesley, Lester Spires, and Clayton Dick.

  • 1946               -Lloyd Leavitt returns as assistant keeper.
  • 1951               -Lloyd Leavitt returns to air force.  Lester Murray takes over as assistant (????).
  • 1952               -The point gets electricity.  A well is dug.  New fog alarm motor. (electric)
  • 1954               -Merril Dines becomes assistant keeper.
  • 1959               -Merril Dines quits; Willard Holmes becomes the new assistant keeper.
  • 1963               -Prescott Dines retires.  Kitchener Randall becomes the fifth light keeper of Green’s Point on March 22nd.                                            -Willard’s son Allen begins filling in as the assistant during the summer (until 1965).
  • 1964               -The two new houses are finished (started in 1963) and the old two-story house is demolished.
  • 1965               -Stewart Matthews replaces Willard Holmes as the assistant keeper.
  • 19??               -Foghorn and lighthouse are automated, newest whistle house is constructed.
  • 1968-72         -Wallace Andrews is assistant during summers
  • 1972-78         -Charles Gillespie and wife Maxine move into the lower house, Charlie becomes the assistant keeper.
  • 1973               - Dudley Hunter is assistant during the summer
  • 1974               -Harry Bryan becomes the assistant during the summer.
  • 1976               -Ground hog gale: wooden causeway is destroyed and replaced with rocks.
  • 1979               -Lower house is sold and moved to Back Bay.
  • 1981               -Velda Randall is light keeper for 6 months (June-November).
  • 1982               -Kitchener and Velda retire; Richard Mullin of Grand Manan becomes the light keeper.

                                 (Richard and family were without an assistant for two years.)
                                -Garage is moved to Green’s Point from Beaver Harbour light. Stairs are constructed.
                                -Computer building is completed.

    • 1983               -Radio Tower is constructed; first (large) computer arrives.
    • 1984               -Graham Brooksbanks is hired as assistant keeper.
    • 198?               -Ernest Matheson becomes the assistant keeper.
    • 1986               -Richard Mullen retires.  Ralph Eldridge becomes the seventh keeper of Green’s Point. Helipad is poured.
    • 1987               - Graham Brooksbanks, Darrell Hussey Ernest Matheson Gordon Clark, Wilfred McAdam, and Margaret Lloyd are assistant keepers during the 1986-1996 periods.  The lighthouse required four people to operate it at this point. It was the central monitoring station for an increasing number of automated stations (More than 20 by the end.) Also, the bunnies are released.
    • 1996                               -Lighthouse fully automated
    • Nov.10 1996                                -Information meeting about The Green’s Point Light Association
    • December 2, 1996       -Agreement signed between The Green’s Point Light Association and the Canadian Coast Guard
    • July 1st 1997                                -Interpretive center opens in the old keeper’s house
